About Us

So we are no strangers to diners, they are actually probably our favorite place to wine and dine.  Aren't we just classy mofos.  One morning we woke up, hungry, well I was at least... Damian was in his usual state of hunger- hangry; when one is so hungry they become angry (yes, please feel bad for me).  We had not been to a diner in a while and I just wasn't in the mood to make breakfast.  I thought it would be a good idea to search for a list of the top diners on the east coast and add to our bucket list to visit every one. Unfortunately, there was no list, at least not any that we liked.  Being the people we are, we decided to make our own! So here we are, doing what we always do, just adding a fun spin to it.  We are doing this for us, it'll be fun, it'll add an experience to our already lovely diner outings, it'll bring us closer together, and we always inadvertently end up rating them anyways.  We have been discussing starting a blog for a while now, but we never knew what exactly we'd write about.  Well, BINGO! Our love of food + Damian's dry dry humor + my need to log everything = Two Bat Fastards.  I hope you enjoy and I hope that our pictures make you hungry.  So hungry that you actually go out and visit a couple of these places.

(Not this picture, we hope this doesn't make you hungry... that'd be weird.)

*Please note, we are in no way, shape, or form food experts or food critics (if our descriptions of food haven't given that away already).  We know what we like and that's about it so take this information as you will; but do realize that we are simple, easily pleased but honest people and if we don't like something, you probably won't either.*

The way we will be rating the diners is as follows:

Scale of 0-10
1. Decor- 15%
2. Service- 20%
3. Food- 65%

ABOUT US
We actually live a very healthy lifestyle.  We eat mostly organic and exercise daily.  We treat ourselves to these little outings about once a week; so when we say we're fat bastards, we in fact are not physically fat (or bastards) we just have a pudgy interior.  I wouldn't even say we're "foodies" whatever that even means.  We just LOVE food, eating it, making it, tasting new things, etc.

Alejandra: I was born in Mexico, and yes, Mexican food is my first love (sorry hun).  But I grew up in a household that ate extremely healthy; primarily because both of my parents were diagnosed with cancer at a young age.  This changed the way my mom cooked for her family, she now believes that the best way to keep healthy is not the newest anti-aging cream or diet pills, rather loving your body so much you only feed it healthy fuel.  That being said, the way I grew up molded me into how I treat my body and feed my body now.  I eat a mainly vegetarian and organic diet and live a "natural" lifestyle.  I try to use the least amount of chemicals in all aspects of my life (from food to household cleaners to my shampoo).  I am also currently training for a half marathon.  This is something I am scared of because I was under 100 pounds for so long and it took me almost seven years to get to where I am today weight wise (121 pounds).  I'm afraid that the constant running will trigger weight loss, but I have changed my diet and also incorporate weight training.  Other than that, I am so excited to do this!

Let's see... what else?  I recently graduated from the University of Delaware and am currently working on my masters at Wilmington University.  I am an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher at a local dual-language elementary/middle charter school.  Teaching is my passion, it makes me who I am and allowing me to work and help children who struggle with English as I once did is one of the greatest gifts God has given me.  I am also a youth minister at my church and do a variety of other volunteer work around my community.  I love giving back because so much was given to my family when we first moved to this country, I believe it is my duty to do the same.  I believe that no amount of material possessions could make you a genuinely happy person.  In order to be happy, you must give back to the community and help those who's needs are greater than yours.

My favorite quote: "The things you own end up owning you." Tyler Durden (Fight Club)  I love this quote because it is so true.  I was a slave to consumerism for so long and not until I realized that the amount of things I collected could not and would not make me happy did I finally find happiness.  Well, that and food...duh!

Things I love besides food: hiking, camping, running, kayaking, yoga, soccer, chia seeds, organic carrots, reading, documentaries, meditating, people watching, my kindergarteners, licking my fingers after crumbling feta cheese, motivational quotes, driving, road trips, dancing (more like awkwardly moving my body because I don't know if you can call what I do "dancing"), laying in bed on a lazy Sunday, rain, autumn trees, science, my spirituality, exercising, talking to strangers, Kid President, sunsets and sunrises, random acts of kindness, The Beatles, Leon Larregui, Mana, classical piano and guitar, my bike, cheese fries, New Mexico, tea, the idea that everything living on this earth is connected and we are one... I could keep going, a lot of things excite me just as him. (& yes, I realize that 5 of those were food, oh well)

Damian:  I was born in Providence, Rhode Island but grew up in southern New Jersey.  Specifically Camden and Washington Township.  My father's family is Italian and my mother's family  Puerto Rican so I got to eat A LOT of fattening, not very nutritious food growing up.  I'm very grateful for that!  I have been in a committed relationship with food since I was a teenager.  My first love!  I used to be quite gluttonous in my youth and early 20's.  However, the last several years I have been doing my best to avoid foods that are high in sodium, sugars, cholesterol, saturated fats, gluten, additives, and any and all processed foods.  I've been eating as natural and organic as I can.  Since meeting Alejandra she has me eating a lot of seeds... But, God do I love to deviate from healthy eating!  Indian, Mexican, Afghan, Greek, Italian, American, Japanese, and  just get in my belly, NOW DAMN YOU!  I do yoga from time to time, meditate, and exercise often but nothing gets me as Zen as a delicious meal that touches my food bone!  If a meal is really, really pleasing I do often say, "I wanna dip my balls in it!"  Like I said, I love food.  Very blessed to have an extremely fast metabolism... Or tape worm...  I'm not sure.  Since Alejandra's Mexican food makes me sad (sorry babe) and I travel extensively for work.  I get to eat out a lot!

A little about me, I'm a veteran of the US Navy Submarine force!  Definite Squid for life.  As you would imagine I "enjoyed" a lot of crappy food while on patrol.  But I gained a new perspective on food because of this experience.  It is not a given.  Food is a gift of nature and a valuable commodity not to be gorged upon (all the time) but to be appreciated.  Often it has been a laborious process to get our meals from their origins to our plates.  I revere that process!  Currently I'm a Field Service Engineer, hence the travel.  I own a home in Somerdale, NJ and am a rabid Philadelphia sports fan...  Ask her.

My favorite quote:  "Who is the happier man?  He who has braved the storm of life and lived?  Or, he who has stayed securely on shore and merely existed?"  Hunter S. Thompson.

Things I like besides food:  Radiohead, The Beatles, Spoon, The Pixies, Modest Mouse, Coen Brothers films, Darren Aronofsky films, David Lynch films, documentaries, Salvador Dali, The Sopranos, Seinfeld, True Detective, Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim, Bill Hicks, Neil DeGrasse-Tyson, playing guitar, fantasy football, hiking and Austin, Texas!
