Green Eggs Cafe (Philadelphia, PA)

February 22, 2014
Green Eggs Cafe (Philadelphia, PA)

First and foremost... let us begin by apologizing for taking so long to update the blog.  Damn, life just gets in the way sometimes and it has been a busy last few weeks.  Anyways, I sound like one of my students, in which case I'd just tell them to stop whining, we are all busy. (The older ones, I would never talk to my Kindergarteners like that, haha!)  Quick update on us: I am 100% vegetarian now... well kida.  Let's say 99.9%... I couldn't resist a (small) piece of chorizo in my eggs the other morning.  But it is so much easier than I thought it would be, I don't even crave meat like I thought I would.  I feel so much better, so much healthier, I have more energy and my digestive system is working like a machine (sorry TMI).  I did recently find out I am allergic to cinnamon... NOOOOOO!!! Worst news of my life, ugh! I was having some symptoms and the doctor said it was either fluoride or cinnamon and since I make my own toothpaste (fluoride free) I knew it wasn't that.  I've cut it out of my diet completely which has been sad but I guess I will live on.  Damian... let's see he is still a meat eating machine, that will never change.  He had Popeyes for lunch the other day as a matter of fact... >_< but what am I to do, right? (Insert evil laugh here)... he did feel sick for the next couple of days though (stop evil laugh because I suffered the consequences as well... yes feel bad for me, it was very unpleasant, so unpleasant I am thinking of purchasing gas masks for the house).  Anywwhoooo.... here it goes, #2...

1. Decor: 5 (%)
  • It was in the middle of a block in Northern Liberties, North Philadelphia, PA.  The neighborhood is geared towards younger professionals and families, not your typical upcoming town though... it was very "hip" I guess you could say. I thought I had seen it all having attended the University of Delaware, surrounded by "high end" hipsters, but nope.  Northern Liberties takes the prize in that aspect.  You needed sunglasses from all of the bleach blonde bobs and pixie hair cuts walking around.  If you didn't know any better, you'd think that Northern Liberties was still flooded with hobos.  Haha, just kidding just kidding, it was out of our comfort zone but still a very very very cute part of town. Okay, besides the town itself, the cafe was adorable I guess.  There was nothing special about it, very modern and very small.  The fact that there was a twenty minute wait is a good sign?  As hangry as we were, we waited.  We had to share a table with another family, not that we mind but it was just a small space to begin with.  This is one of three locations, so I'm not sure if they're all like this or if it's just this one in particular.
2. Service: 6 (%)
  • The service was okay, not bad, not great.  Like noted above, we waited about 40 minutes to get a (half) table after being told there was a 20 minute wait.  That wasn't a problem, the characters surrounding us outside were enough to keep us entertained.  They also did offer coffee outside, which was nice. As soon as we were seated, were welcomed, received our menus, and the waiter walked away, Damian commented "he's high." Hahahaaa.... yeah, he was sooooooo high!!  On what?  Who knows, but it was entertaining.  I guess for the type of cafe it was and the location it was in, we weren't surprised. Regardless, he was friendly and helpful.

3. Food: 10 (65%)
  • Are we being too easy with the 10's here?  Regardless, the food was amazing. It came out in no time, it was presentable, and the portions were amazeballs.
  • I ordered the Huevos Rancheros (non-vegetarian option).  The dish is described as "Ancho roasted pork and Chihuahua cheese taquitos, with black bean sauce, sunny side up eggs, and ranchero salsa."  This isn't how my mom (or anyone in Mexico that I know of) makes huevos rancheros but they were still good! I love that the taquitos were "fried" so it added the crunchy to it.  The salsa was good, the black beans were perfect and the pork was so tender and deliciously seasoned.  It all went great together.  It came with a side of pepper and herb potatoes which didn't go to well with the meal but they were sooooo good.  I love potatoes but never have them so it was a nice and enjoyable treat. The meal inspired me to make my own vegetarian version at home one weekend.  Mine were good (patting my own back on this one), but they were no where near as good as the ones from here.

  • Damian ordered the Reuben Burger.  The dish is described as "House blend of corned beef, sirloin, and spices, Russian aioli, house made slaw, gruyere cheese served on LeBus marble rye."  I tried a bite, it took a lot of power to not take the sandwich off his plate and just eat it myself, it was that good.  His description of it is...

  • We didn't order dessert this time :( our honey mango green tea was enough for the day but looking around, the french toasts all looked so tempting and were definitely mouth watering.

Westmont Diner (Westmont, NJ)

February 17, 2014
Westmont Diner (Westmont, NJ)

1. Decor: 8 (12%)
  • It was a very small diner, about 20 tables total but you feel at home right away. You can tell it is family owned and operated.  Damian (claiming he is the all-knowing of diner history, tehehe) said the decor was early twentieth century ("based on the wood paneling and lodgy look..." oh how I love him).  After doing about two minutes of research on my end... I couldn't come up with anything.  We'll have to learn more about US diner history as our journey continues.  I will say though that the parking lot was small.  I had some difficulties parking, but then again, on certain days I would have trouble parking a SmartCar.

2. Service: 9 (18%)
  • The service was wonderful! Like I said, it has a very homey feeling and the service contributed to that.  Our waitress was very friendly.  I give her extra points for not looking at me like I was crazy when I asked for cinnamon for my coffee.  Anyways, we were seated right away and the waitress gave us some menu suggestions (that we went with).

3. Food: 10 (65%)
  • Okay, so let us not forget that this is the first diner we are rating so that is a bit bias.  But with that being said, we are also no strangers to diners... how do you think we celebrated Valentine's Day? Overall, the food was amazing, it set a very high bar for the rest of our journey.
  • I ordered a crab cake melt on rye bread with a side of mixed green salad and house vinaigrette dressing. Oh and let's not forget the coffee... I wanted to add "coffee" to the rating, but, well yeah.  It was good, fresh and hot (just the way momma likes it).  The melt was amazeballs.  It had the perfect amount of cheese on it which didn't over power the crab meat and the rye bread made a perfect combination (yesss... thank you waitress!).  The salad was fresh and bright green and the vinaigrette dressing was just right.

  • Damian ordered a sausage, bacon and cheese omelet which came with home fries and wheat toast.  I had a bite, and yes I agree, it was delicious.  It was cooked to perfection, wasn't greasy at all, it was a good sized portion (not over the top like many diners).  The potatoes were good, seasoned so well and honestly, just added to the omelet.

  • Okay and then I must admit, it being past noon and us not having eaten anything for the day yet, we were very very hungry.  In this state of hunger, our fatness overtook and we ordered "dessert."  And oh gosh are we glad we did.  We ordered "paradise french toast" which is french toast with bananas, coconut and caramel.  I insisted on finishing my salad before I dug in but Damian couldn't wait a minute.  I don't blame him, it looked amazing! And oh my, did it taste amazing! I'll admit, we were speechless for a few seconds.  If I had balls, I would, as Damian ALWAYS says, dip them in it.  They were crispy on the outside but oh so soft on the inside.  The bananas were cooked, it had the perfect amount of coconut shavings on top (it didn't over power the taste of the meal) and the caramel only added an amazing sweet flavor.  It was a great combination, so great that Damian commented "someone is using their brains back there."
